Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

It’s always interesting to learn about traditions and habits around other people’s Thanksgiving celebration. This year, Bill and I are going to keep it simple and have ordered a smoked turkey from a nearby BBQ smokehouse. Of course, there will be plenty of sides to cook and desserts to prepare, but my favorite part of the meal, after visiting with my family, is the wine pairing.

If we have a roasted turkey, we usually have a white wine, but since this turkey is smoked, it needs a wine that can stand up to its stronger flavor. I think the most important thing in selecting a wine is that it’s drinkable. That’s a snooty way of saying that you just like it, and that takes some experimenting. I don’t mind experimenting with wine at all, and I’ve narrowed our selection down to two bottles that we really enjoy.

The first is a nice inexpensive pinot noir by Meiomi, which is a California Coastal blend of grapes. At under $15. per bottle, it’s very affordable, especially if we have many guests and need multiple bottles. The second is a special bottle we have from our trip to Napa Valley, Caymus Conundrum, a red blend of California varietals. The Caymus Vineyards produced a special wine, with a unique label, to celebrate their 25th year in business. It is not available until early 2016 for sale outside of the vineyard. Although I’m going California this year, I never overlook the new Texas wines that are making headlines.

We usually let the bottles sit open to breathe while preparing food or watching the Longhorns play football. It’s making my mouth water just thinking and writing about it.

Regardless, we’ll be thankful for the privilege of choice – not just of wine, but where we go and what we do. Freedom of choice is always high on my gratitude list as I look around the world at so many who have few choices. I hope your Thanksgiving choices are nourishing, satisfying, and appreciated wherever you are. Cheers!
