Hi Y’all!
I’m coming to you this month from beautiful Santa Fe. Several of you have asked about my favorites on Facebook and Twitter, so I’m listing my top things to do in the area.
1. A must is the Georgia O’Keefe museum (closes at 5).
2. Eat anything at Cowgirl BBQ, especially the Game Burger with Green Chili.
3. Have breakfast at Pasquale’s and sit at the community table. Best eggs in town – anything is good. (Plaza Cafe for regular breakfast.)
4. Eat Wednesday Christmas (chicken enchiladas with red and green sauce) at Tomasitas with their gold or silver coin margarita.
5. Another must is to eat at The Shed (but be sure and make a reservation before you leave Houston – last minute won’t happen).
6. Have lunch at The Compound and look at the art on Canyon Road. Dinner is wonderful and romantic there as well, but at lunch it’s cheaper and you get the experience without the price. If you’re looking for a big night out do dinner there or at Geronimo’s, also on Canyon Road. Or, in town go to The Bull Ring for a Steak. Make a res.
7. Go out to 10K Waves Japanese Spa – nothing like it in the U.S. If you have time and are in the mood eat at Izanami at 10K waves and have a flight of sake.
8. Drive up to the ski area off of Hyde Park Road and walk around the lift – you’ll probably see snow. On the drive back down stop at Tesuque hiking trail and hike up through the Aspen along the creek – can go ten minutes or hours – easy hike. Or just stop, sit at a picnic table and take a picture.
9. You don’t need to be told to walk around the town square and shop, but be sure to go two blocks over to Marcy Street – my favorite stores and lunch spots are there. Try Il Piatto and La Boca – lunch or dinner. Also one block over at El Meson – make a res in the bar and listen to the music and eat tapas, or make a res in the dining room and eat Paella. Other end of town Collected Works Bookstore and Coyote Cafe.
10. Visit the Cathedral and walk by Loretto Chapel and see the staircase made by the carpenter who came in from the dessert – supposedly.
11. For people watching go to the bar at the Hotel St. Frances and have the smoked sage margarita – sit at the window and watch for hours.
12. If you have time drive out to Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch – or save that for next trip.
13. If you get altitude sickness, go to Santa Fe Oxygen and Healing Bar. Get the altitude toddy and oxygen treatment.
14. If you can, try to get Santa Fe Opera tickets in season – blissful!
I could list 50 more things, but these are the highlights.
Until next time. Happy Reading,
Manning
